Overview of Ayay Chhlorng Chhleuy
Ayay អាយ៉ៃឆ្លងឆ្លើយ is another form of Cambodian vocal entertainment. It is similar to a stand-up comedy, but instead of talking, they sing. Ayay almost always has two stand-up vocalists, one male and one female, taking turn singing alternatively with a live traditional music ensemble that are seating on the back of the stage. The band normally consists of one drummer, one fidel player, one Takhe player, one dulcimer player. Other instruments may be used as well.
The context of this type of entertainment is comedy performed to make people laugh. However, it is quite educational also. It is a form of question and answer, but not to make any partner wins or looses. It is designed to educate people in a humorous way. In the performance, they sing, ask each other questions, tease each other. Then they stop singing. They talk, dance, then back to singing. The performance ends with a singing of a song known as Kare Yuon Sar to wish audiences and to say good-bye. Ayay has been a popular Khmer entertainment, performed at public places, over the radio broadcast or live TV. Private party can also hire them to perform.
